Speed Management

UNDER CONSTRUCTION. This course presents effective methods of managing work zone speeds. Determination of work zone speed limits is typically based on state laws, agency policies, and engineering judgment. Many factors impact a decision to reduce the regulatory speed limit in a work zone. This course addresses whether slower speeds improve safety, how drivers are told to slow down, when slower speeds are important, whether speed limits should be changed frequently to match changing conditions, if posted reductions are enough to cause voluntary speed reductions, the impact of law enforcement, and a decision tool for managing work zone speeds.
